Charlie's memorial tribute to Jim Melchiano

On Saturday November 12, 2005 there was a memorial service for Jim Melchiano, Kathy's beloved husband. Charlie Gleek's talk follows:

I'd like to say a few words about Jim. I find it difficult to summarize our experiences with Jim over the years, but I'll do my best. Jim was an important part of our family. He was a good friend, a wonderful grandparent to Kiera & Gwenn, and loving husband to my mom.

I remember when my Mom first introduced us to Jim-she was so nervous that we like him. Of course, after spending five minutes with Jim, you realized how likable and laid back a guy he was. When she said that they were getting married, I remember thinking how great it was that two people, so different in life experiences & background, could come together to love each other.

Jim loved Kathy tremendously. He was patient and kind to her. More importantly, he was always willing to go off with her on all sorts of adventures; even when he'd rather be home, sitting on the couch watching The Sopranos or football.

Cher & I always loved coming over to their house on Sundays for either breakfast or dinner. More often than not, we'd end up out on the patio, engaged in some sort of discussion about the world. Jim always took a great interest in what I was working on/reading/or teaching. Over our cigars, Jim would always find a way to ask the most probing questions about politics. I always thought he was trying to catch me in some sort of intellectual trap; but in the end I think he thoroughly enjoyed learning. Most importantly, Jim always provided us with great stories about his life and sage advice to Cher & I.

Finally, the girls will especially miss their 'Papa Jim'. They loved nothing more than coming over to Grandma & Pap Jim's house, gobbling down adult-sized portions of Jim's chicken cutlets, and 'chasing smoke' from his cigar on the patio.
We love you & we'll miss you, Jim.

What is the Charles Preston Family Blog?

This blog is dedicated to sharing the life and times of the decendents of Charles Preston. It is to provide a place for all members and relatives to keep up with the changes, news, activities of the Preston family members.

It is not to be used to share the latest internet joke, but it can be used to share your latest photo or short story. A place to tell of vacations, career changes and successes. A place to talk about Sam or Mitch or Sophie or Cole or Sam or ... A place to talk of the latest Civil war battle field visited of soccer goal scored...A favorite recipe or how to fold a sheet or how to bake an apple pie!

If you have questions about the blog respond to this post...

First Post!

This is my first post to the Charles Preston Family Blog!

We here in Cincinnati are thinking about those who have passed...
- Jim Melchiano, Kathy Preston's second husband...Kathy's beloved husband...A man who semed to live life richly...Throwing caution to the wind...
- Amy Thomas Quimby, only 40 years...Famly friend of the Schillers...Compassionate, Bright, the baker of our wedding cake, friendly, ... As Beth put it...A bonus to your day...

Rememberance may not seem like the greatest way to start off a family blog, but it is times like these that make one think most about their family. Hence, the starting of the Charles Preston Family Blog!
